West Auckland.

The West Coast of Auckland is a coastline of beautiful and raw beaches spanning from Muriwai in the north down to Whatipu in the south. Being mostly beach breaks with ever changing sand banks, you never quite know what you’re going to get!

These beaches are swell magnets and often have big and unruly waves so it is important to have a good knowledge of the ocean if you surf here. If you’re looking for a longboard wave or something more manageable if you’re not too confident, pop over to the East Coast of Auckland where it is often small and fun, its only a short drive away!

It is most likely to be offshore and small enough to surf these beaches in the seasons of Summer and Autumn… you’d be lucky to get a decent wave in winter! But beware, when the waves are good you’re likely to be surfing with most of Auckland, unless you know of a secret spot! Because the popular surf spots are often crowded, it is even more important to be educated about proper surf etiquette and how to respect your fellow surfers in the water.

In the summer the water is definitely warm enough for a spring suit or togs but the sun is harsh, so don’t forget to cover up and wear sunscreen. In winter the water doesn’t cool down too much, you’d be comfortable in a 4.3 most days, a hood or booties might be good for the windier days.

Liv Haysom

My name is Liv, I’ve grown up in Piha beach, just out of Auckland, for all 15 years of my life and I’ve been surfing ever since I can remember. I think I caught my first wave when I was 4 or 5. Living so close to the beach and my dad being a keen surfer meant it was just a natural thing for me to start surfing. I did my first surf comp when I was 9 and have been hooked ever since!

Over the last few years surfing has become an even bigger part of my life, I spend lots of my time training, both in and out of the water, for upcoming comps and just embracing the amazing life I get to live with the best people! I even became the under 16 girls national champ at the start of this year which was pretty amazing. In the future I would really like to travel the world surfing and try to take it as far as I can, but for now I’m just focusing on balancing school, training and surfing as best as I can and spending quality time with my friends and family.

I’m really excited to be involved in this project and have the chance to help evolve women’s surfing in this beautiful corner of the world we get to call home. Can’t wait to see some of you girls in the water!
