North Auckland.

Auckland’s North East Coast spans from Orewa in the South to Te Arai in the North. This stretch of coastline primarily consists of beach breaks, both large expansive stretches and sandy coves. We also have a few quality reef breaks that work well on the right swell and tide.

Generally, the east is by far the more relaxed of Auckland’s two coasts, protected beach breaks offer gentle, mellow waves perfect for beginners and laid-back cruisers i.e. Orewa and Omaha. Open coast beaches tend to pick up more swell and have punchier beach breaks, favoured by intermediate surfers and up i.e. Pakiri, and Black Swamp. Several open coast spots offer both reef and beach breaks i.e. Tawharanui, Forestry and Te Arai.

There are lots of options depending on your level and preference. Most east coast breaks work well on a NE to E swell and a fuller tide. Open coast spots tend to pick up more swell and from more directions i.e. N to SE. The water temps stay fairly mild, winter lows bottom out at 15 degrees, so a 4/3 steamer and booties are recommended. In Spring and Autumn, you’ll be sweet with a good 3/2 steamer. During summer coastal waters get up to 22 degrees so either a spring suit of rashie and boardies will do the trick.

Lydia Green

Kia Ora, my name is Lydia and I’m AWSA’s Auckland NE Coast Rep. I’ve always had a strong connection to the ocean and began surfing as another way to enjoy and interact with the marine environment.

I soon realised that the act of surfing was an excellent pathway to connect others to the ocean and took this a step further by founding Saltwater Eco Ltd. Being 100% female owned, coupled with our holistic approach to teaching surfing, we soon evolved to have a strong ladies surf focus and following. Which we then expanded into monthly ladies only surf events as well as setting up Salty Sisters Surf Club, an Auckland based social platform for ladies to connect and surf together.

I’m passionate about creating safe and nurturing environments for women of all ages and abilities to surf their own surf. I am excited to help facilitate connection and community, to build on what we have achieved locally and spread the good vibes regionally and nationally.

Lets go surfing!
