Canterbury

Canterbury is the underdog of the great surfing destinations in New Zealand, and as the saying goes everybody loves an underdog!

Canterbury has something for everyone here, from the beach breaks on Christchurch’s east side, a logging haven tucked in the far corner with its shortboarding rival over the hill, to its long stretch of coastline, vastly uncrowded and perfect on an offshore day. Further North in Canterbury gets you to a gold mine for waves on the rocky coast of Kaikoura.

The waves are world class, where the mountains kiss the sea, and the wildlife is also spectacular. In Canterbury you are never far from a break, South of Christchurch also sees some hot spots to find around Banks Peninsula and even further south to Omaru and Timaru.

The beauty here is there’s so much to discover and once you do, you may have the break to yourself. Often we find ourselves jumping in the car for a day trip to somewhere in hopes to score. In saying that, it is important to note that our offshore days are those southerly days, where the winter winds create some of the best shaped waves, so an extra layer (or two) of rubber is recommended when the months start to cool.
